The Bible tells us that "the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23); "But God demonstrates his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
The simplest way to explain the gospel is:
God Loves Us
God loves us because God is love. Now almost everyone believes this about God, but God is also holy and just.
We Blew It
The first humans, Adam and Eve, were created good by God, but they sinned and the entire human race became sinful. Since then, all people are born sinners and the result of our sinfulness is that we are separated from God from birth, are spiritually helpless and are in need of a Savior.
Christ Paid for It
Christ paid for our sin in that Christ is God, who also became man and as a man Christ died as our substitute. In His grace Christ offers His forgiveness as a gift. But simply knowing all of this is not enough.
We Must Receive Him
We must respond to God's grace by asking Christ to be our forgiver and leader, and the result of receiving Him is our spiritual transformation by the Holy Spirit. (See Isaiah 6:3; 1 John 4:16; Psalm 9:16a; Romans 3:23, 6:23; Isaiah 64:6; Philippians 2:5-7; 1 Peter 3:18; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 1:12; 1 John 1:9; 1 Peter 3:15; 2 Corinthians 5:17)
Begin a Personal Relationship with Jesus
Admit that you have sinned. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
Believe those sins are forgiven by God."Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord (Jesus) will be saved" (Romans 10:13).
Confess your faith in Jesus. "Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God - children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God" (John 1:12-13). "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).
